Mammoth Lakes

Mammoth Lakes, in California's Eastern Sierras, is a rustic resort town surrounded by stunning landscapes, that transform dramatically with the seasons. In the summer, Mammoth Lakes attracts campers, to the crystal-clear waters and the extensive network of hiking and mountain biking trails. With over a hundred lakes to choose from, people engaging in activities like camping, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and swimming are scattered throughout the area . The Twin Lakes, Lake Mary, and Convict Lake are among the favorites.

One of the most popular hikes is the trail to Devil's Postpile National Monument, where you can see basalt columns formed by ancient volcanic activity. Mountain biking is another highlight of Mammoth Lakes, particularly during the summer and fall. The Mammoth Mountain Bike Park offers an extensive trail system that take riders through scenic forests and along ridge lines with spectacular views. It is not uncommon to see bear throughout the region.

Earthquake Fault a short drive from downtown in the Inyo National Forest is a fracture in the earth believed to have formed around 600 years ago during one of the recent Inyo/Mono Craters eruptions. It probably did not occur during an earthquake. There is an easy short hike around the fault as well as picnic tables and areas to relax.

As the snow begins to fall, Mammoth Lakes transforms into a winter sports complex. Mammoth Mountain, has over 3,500 acres of skiable terrain, attracting skiers and snowboarders. The mountain's diverse runs include gentle slopes for beginners to challenging black diamond trails for the more experienced. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are also popular, with trails that wind through serene forests and across open meadows, offering another way to explore the snowy landscape.

Beyond its natural attractions, Mammoth Lakes has a variety of restaurants, shops, and festivals throughout the year. For those interested in exploring further, nearby attractions include hot springs many hot springs along the 395, and the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Saddlebag Lake, Yosemite National Park, June Lake, Rock Creek and Mono Lake. Each are a day trip away.
