We arrived in New Orleans on a cold overcast day and stumbled upon an explosion of color. Art expressing the history, culture and people of the community. Publicly funded murals, sanctioned street art and graffiti are mixed and blur the lines of acceptance. Images celebrate pop culture. promote businesses, protest issues and transport us into nature or out of this world. The works blend in with the surrounding natural landscapes and functional infrastructure. Bus stops, telephone poles, trash receptacles, signage and vehicles are embedded into the experience of the work. We have stayed in this neighborhood before and our recent experience was refreshing. We appreciated the recognition of the role that street art plays in revitalizing the city, community and our experience as art loving visitors.
