The second largest canyon in the US is in the Texas panhandle, just south of Amarillo: Palo Duro Canyon. Home of some fascinating conflicts in the westward expansion, the canyon now feels like a mini-Moab or mini–Grand Canyon. With a descent of some 800 feet to the canyon floor on the canyon base you look up at red sandstone cliffs. The campgrounds are here and there are numerous groomed hiking and biking trails right off the campsite.
The museum on the rim was built of native stone in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps has gorgeous views, and on the valley floor. The Gallery shares historical video productions (that could be considered outdated today), archeological and nature exhibits.
