Silverton, Colorado

Silverton, Colorado, is a picturesque town that embodies the spirit of the Old West. Surrounded by the  San Juan Mountains, this former mining town offers outdoor activities and cultural and historical attractions. It is also just a fun place to walk around.

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is one of Silverton's best attractions. This historic steam train has been in continuous operation since 1882, originally serving the booming mining industry by transporting gold and silver ore from the San Juan Mountains. Today, the railroad offers scenic rides between Durango and Silverton, taking passengers on a journey through Colorado's stunning landscapes. The route winds from Durango along the Animas River, crosses trestle bridges, and offers panoramic views of rugged mountains, deep canyons, and lush forests. The trip is known to be worth the steep price however just watching the train entering and leaving town is an event not to be missed.

Silverton's historic district is filled with Old West charm with local artists woodcarvings on display. The town's main street, Greene Street, is lined with well-preserved buildings dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Silverton's history is deeply rooted in mining and several early homes built by miners are now inhabited by lovers of tiny homes. The Silverton Museum features exhibits on the town's mining history, local geology, and the lives of early settlers. In town you will also find mine tours and activities such as panning for gold in the Animas River.

The San Juan Mountains, offer a wide range of activities, for outdoor enthusiasts including hiking and mountain biking in the summer to skiing and snowboarding in the winter. Just hanging out in a park in town and shooting hoops surrounded by the mountains is a also a playful way to absorb the location.
