Strong National Museum of Play

The Strong National Museum of Play is dedicated to the exploration and celebration of play. Located in Rochester, New York it is filled with interactive exhibits and is home to an impressive collection of toys, dolls, games, and electronic games. It offers playful experiences for all ages. One day at the museum will just touch the surface on all that it has to offer.

Throughout the museum you will see the vast toy collection that spans decades of (mostly American) toy history. Engaging with these timeless playthings is a delightful discovery for kids, teens and adults. The upper level of the Strong is the home of the National Toy Hall of Fame another prominent exhibit, recognizing toys that have inspired creative play and are cultural icons. Older visitors will experience a nostalgic journey.

Also on the upper level is the World Video Game Hall of Fame. This area honors the most influential and enduring video games of all time. Inductees include classics and more recent games and the exhibit celebrates their impact on culture and society.

The American Comic Book Heroes exhibit showcases the evolution of superheroes and comic books, including life-sized statues and original artwork. The outdoor Hasbro Game Park playground features giant games to play with and climb. In the Reading Adventureland Exhibit follow the yellow brick road into literary landscapes inspired by children’s books. The Dancing Wings Butterfly Garden offers a serene escape where visitors can walk among hundreds of free-flying butterflies. There is also a mini set of Sesame Street that visitors can walk through, the pinball arcade, a mini supermarket for pretend shopping, a carousel, a high ropes course and more.

The Strong emphasizes the importance of play in learning and human development. Educational programs and workshops are offered providing deeper insights into the history and significance of play, encouraging visitors to think critically about the role of play in their own lives. If you are lucky, you also may get a tour of the basement storage with thousands of toys not currently on display.
