Tallahassee, Florida

After an unproductive alligator search we crossed into Florida’s Big Bend looking for good pizza. We imagined that in Tallahassee, a college town with over 70,000 students there must be a lot of competition for the best slice.  We landed at comic book styled Gaines Street Pies. The pizza was not only what the reviews claim to be the best pizza in Tallahassee but also some of the best pizza we experienced around the country. If you like classic thin crust Neapolitan pizza arrive hungry.

Driving around town through the lush moss-covered trees we realized that Tallahassee looked like a place to spend some time. As art lovers we headed over to the Art’s District at Railroad Square hoping to play pinball on vintage machines only to find that in was too early in the day and the location was closed. Instead, we walked around and enjoyed the largest concentration of murals in town.  Railroad Square also had several curated vintage, thrift, antique stores, art galleries, and local shops. The vintage shops were a great find because they were not picked over like we are used to living in a large city. Railroad Square is best known for First Fridays Monthly Festival with live entertainment. If you are in the area check it out.

Next, we visited Cascades Park the large central park is considered the social center of Tallahassee. The discovery playground playscape, was designed with natural materials and a child’s play experience in mind.  The imagination fountain, a splash pad is a favorite among locals and visitors on a hot day. The amphitheater hosts live concerts at night and on weekend. With miles of trails when the temperature is mild Cascades Park is also a great place to put in some steps. In the middle of the park notice the Prime Meridian Marker, set in 1824, the beginning point for all land surveys in the state of Florida.
