If you have ever wondered where and when the hottest temperature every recorded on earth is the answer is 134F in Death Valley, California on July 10, 1913. That temperature inspired Willis Herron to build World’s Tallest Thermometer to draw freeway travelers to his restaurant the Bun Boy in the desert town of Baker, California. Baker on Interstate 15 is between Los Angeles and Vegas, and is at the gateway of Death Valley. The thermometer, standing at 134 feet tall can display the maximum temperature of 134F, although thus far the highest temperature it has ever recorded is 127F. There is a gift shop at the base where you can purchase souvenirs that support the recent renovation and high electric bill to keep the thermometer working.
The thermometer is visible from the freeway in all directions but if it isn’t too hot you may want to get off and stretch your legs. Baker has many gas stations and food stops a country store, and attention seekers where you can try Alien fresh jerky or eat at Mad Greek Café with classic statues, music, and ostentatious interior. Across the highway from Baker is the Mohave National Reserve. This preserve protects a large area of California's desert.
