The quaint town of Valentine, NE is quiet for much of the year and in summer becomes a destination for nationally acclaimed canoeing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, tubing, kayaking, hunting, fishing, and camping. As the county seat there are several historic buildings, bridges and historical markers scattered across the Sandhills of Cherry County. Bikers explore The Cowboy Trail, a 195 mile rails-to-trails route that runs from Valentine to Norfolk crosses the Niobrara River on a century old 148-foot trestle bridge. Authentic bakeries and restaurants cater to the many visitors. The history of Sandhills ranch life is on display at Arthur Bowring Ranch State Historical Park.
