Wall Drug, located in Wall, South Dakota, is an attraction that has captivated travelers for decades. Originally a small pharmacy, it has grown into a sprawling complex featuring, shops, restaurants, and attractions. Wall Drug embodies the spirit of American roadside culture. The Hustead’s, the owners of Wall Drug struggling to attract customers during the Great Depression, decided to offer free ice water to parched travelers heading to the newly opened Mount Rushmore (and the more recent construction of Crazy Horse). This simple gesture of hospitality turned Wall Drug into a thriving business and a beloved stop for road trippers. Today the famous billboards that start miles away attract over two million visitors annually.
The expansive complex includes the Wall Drug Café, known for homemade donuts, buffalo burgers, and the free ice water. Free attractions include an animatronic T-Rex and cowboys, a shooting gallery, a splash pad and other novelties that create a carnival-like atmosphere. The art gallery showcases Western art and Native American artifacts. The collection of stores sell everything from Western wear and cowboy boots to candy, souvenirs and jewelry.
Wall Drug's amusement atmosphere contrasts the dry landscape of nearby Badlands National Park. It is an ideal stop for those exploring the area.
